About Music Sticks

These were once the most common and important musical instruments throughout Australia (except in the Torres Strait, where drums provided the rhythmic accompaniment.) In traditional Aboriginal corroborees music sticks are used to provide the rhythm for the dance as the didgeridoo player provides the melody with his haunting sounds.

Music sticks may be single and beaten against some other object (e.g. the ground, trees, weapons, bark) or paired and beaten against each other (in some areas stones are used instead of wood). Music sticks could be played by the lead singer, but also as a general accompaniment and often by women. Today Aboriginal music sticks are used all over the world as an ancient percussion instrument. Australian Authentic Dreamtime Art supplies music sticks in both traditional and contemporary style artworks.
