About Boomerangs

Contrary to popular belief, returning boomerangs were not used extensively by the traditional Aboriginal people. In fact most of the working boomerangs used by the Aboriginals were designed for traditional, ceremonial or hunting purposes and were not returning. It is generally accepted that the creation of the returning boomerang is believed to be uniquely Australian.

Consider the flight of a good returning boomerang and you would have to agree that it is truly ingenious ( a very similar system to the modern helicopter ). The creators would have undoubtedly needed a strong understanding of aerodynamics, wind, lift and tip vortices to be able to shape the boomerang so it flew in the correct returning ark.

The actual word "boomerang" comes from the Georges River area. The boomerang is basically a very specialised throwing stick fashioned from particularly hard timber such as brigalow. As it was then, so it is now with Australian Authentic Dreamtime Art producing a full range of boomerangs from sturdy, warp resistant brigalow timber. The timber used is felled, dried and aged prior to the blank boomerangs being cut out. (This system effectively halts later warping of the boomerang.) Once the blanks have been cut out and hand shaped they are finished sanded and readied for the relevant base coating. Sealed and base coated the boomerangs are now ready for the artists to do their thing.

Each artist goes to work painting certain themes or stories on the boomerangs using a variety of special and unique techniques. Once the artist is finished and has signed the item we finish coat the boomerang to seal the art and to avoid smearing. The article is now final checked, a product tag is added, it’s wrapped and ready to be shipped. Australian Authentic Dreamtime Art produces boomerangs in traditional brigalow timber, a very dark and hard timber, and an inexpensive ply timber range. Sizes range from 6" 8" 10" 12" 14" 16" 18" 20" & 22" and are either clear sealed or epoxy resin coated.
